I took a couple of pictures today of the tactical radio installed in my L-4. The BC-659 that I bought was a non working unit so I went ahead and removed the rest of the radio interior. I also cut six 3 1/8" lightening holes in the bottom of the case. The radio and antenna together now weigh a shade under 16 lbs.
I still have to install the cargo straps across the top of the radio and may only use one wide one as my antenna holder is still on the top and I do not want to remove it.
The installation is portable and the aircraft is not flown with the radio in place. When I travel to an event the radio and antenna will be removed and secured to the front seat along with my duffel bag using the belt and shoulder harness. My cleaning supplies will be carried inside the hollow radio. It only takes a few minutes to remove or install the radio and antenna for display.
I still have to construct a portable dummy battery pack to locate under the front seat using the Army manual specifications.
The AN-29C antenna is brand new and still in it's original light gray finish.
