It has taken a couple of months but I finally have my new Piper Data Plate. During the time the initial request was made Piper raised the price from $350 to $1,000 for the replacement data plate.

When you send them the money you also have to surrender your old plate.

I know that an aircraft data plate is almost the same thing as a Birth Certificate and without it the aircraft is not legal, still the $1,000 price tag is pretty stiff. The good thing is when you get your new plate you will have the FAA letter along with the Piper documentation if the FAA ever ramp checks a shiny new data plate on an old aircraft.
