Took the first steps today in understanding this much feared and deadly stall. Took the Super Dec up to 3000', rolled it a couple times to get the inverted system all filled up, and then stalled it in a turn both directions with enough bottom rudder to get the ball completely out of the slot.
First one was just a climbing turn - the lower wing did stall, but it gave me plenty of warning, and did not flip me upside down.
Then I steepened the bank and pulled harder - ball still out of the socket. Each time the lower wing stalled, and each time plenty of warning. I did about six, and recovery was simply benign - release the back pressure. Steepest was about 60 degrees bank angle.
I did them with somewhat reduced power - full power on this bird gives a very nice "up" line. I am open to suggestions - should I go for more power? Does the ball have to be in the corner? What am I doing wrong?
Hopefully next week we will try it in the Super Cub.
