Has anyone tried a "cheap" auto GPS in aircraft? Does it work? Will it get confused bvy being @ 3000'?

I had never used one before and got a cheap Garmin $139 unit for my wife for Christmas. After using it in various modes I asked myself, why not use in airplane? Easy enough to do except I'm down for extensive condition inspection and just haven't had a chance to try it. All I need to do is install a power plug and go fly but wondered if.....
