Hi everybody,

I made a hood for the Garmin handheld GPS that I use because the light level in an L-4 cockpit makes it almost impossible to read the screen without one even at full brightness. I also use the suction cup holder that came with the unit.

Recently, however, while getting the airplane ready for a trip, I found out that my suction cup holder wasn't holding any longer. I had never to this point experienced any sort of problem with it. It always seems to happen when you need something. I first thought it was the new plexiglass window I'd installed, but the suction cup wouldn't hold on any surface. So I took a good look at it. It had plenty of small scars and rough spots. That was the reason. That rubber cup isn't rubber. It a cast polymer that is flexible, but has limits.

I had never thought about the condition of the glass or how I was storing the holder. That black flexible cup is fairly soft stuff, and if you don't take care when you toss it in the flight bag or whatever, It ca get scarred up and not work.

The good news is there's a place on Amazon that sells replacement holders for 6 bucks. I ordered two. I store them in plastic bags now.
