"Plastic" bottoms on 1500s

If have use of a set of 1500s this winter. The owner has suggested we put plastic (I know it is not plastic but can't remember exactly what material is used &#128516 on the bottoms.

Does anyone have info on how this is done? Is it worth it? Approval source? We have an example of 2000s with the mod but not 1500s.
