I have a 1945 J3 Cub with a Continental 65. The old gascolator was ancient and filthy so I thought I would remove and clean it up a little. It was welded together with rust and I destroyed it trying to take it apart. I ordered a replacement from Univair and mounted it on the airplane. I believe I am mounting it correctly and I am certain that I am tightening the crap out of the nut on the bottom of the bail to compress the bowl, cork gasket and top together, but I can't get the damned thing to stop leaking! Upon inspection of the cork gasket, it appears that one side of the cork gasket is compressing and therefore sealing, yet the opposing side of the gasket appears like perhaps it is not sealing. All of this leads me to believe that the bail is not pulling straight up on the bowl. I know this sounds like a simple problem with a simple device, but damned if I am able to make it fuel tight. I am to the point where I want to take Univair's $200 gascolator and throw it in the trash. Does anyone recommend a solution?, Have an original working gascolator for sale? Anyone know anything about Steve's Gascolator (website company)?
