I saw this "starter" system in an EAA article recently, and received some information about it from Mr. Hamp. It is basically an STC'd system for installation on aircraft without starters (on engines of 100hp or less). It consists of an electric drill, mounted to the firewall, connected to a sprocket mounted behind the prop.
A chord from the drill trigger into the cockpit allows you to start the engine without handpropping.

It takes away the originality of handpropping I understand, but increases your safety and might help older pilots who are unsure of handpropping any more. It is also much cheaper than buying a C-90-12 with a battery and starter.

Anyway -- the pictures of it look a bit....homemade right now. But he sells the kit for $1800 and I thought perhaps someone out there has tried it out and has a "field report" on how it works, or doesn't, on a J-3.

Has anyone installed one of these on their J-3 yet?
