Three years ago, I bought this plane in a hangar find. She went into a corn field in September of 2009. She was put back together with the exception of the right wing, which needed a new front spar. The engine was torn down and rebuilt (zero time since overhaul. I took her apart, took her home and deskinned the left wing. I rebuilt it and ordered everything new for the right wing and started the build on it. Then I just quit. Lost interest. Not proud of that.
The guy I bought it from was a 94 y.o. A&P/IA. Interesting character. He was hard to understand, but told me about the work he had done, to include the engine overhaul.
Bottom line, she needs some more cockpit work and the right wing finished. Cover both wings and plumb the engine and fuel system. I haven’t even started the engine, but it has brand new mineral oil in it, and looks good. I sprayed the cylinders with ACF 50. She has two 12 gallon wing aux tanks (God only knows why) and the main tank. All new plexiglass. All tail feathers and ailerons are covered. I don’t know if the struts are sealed, but they’re straight and if they were bought after the 2009 crash, they just might be. And she needs shoulder harnesses….please!
A good father/son/grandson project.
She is located at 82J, Roscoe Field (Ferguson’s) in Pensacola.
