I was flying with an instructor when I bought my Cub to get some much needed tailwheel training. Got my tailwheel endorsement 2 years earlier in a Champ but hadn't flown much.
Anyway I had always done my downwind and abeam the numbers reduce power , look back at about 45 degree's , turn base and then on to final.
This instructor had me pull on carb heat and reduce power with about the last 1/4 of downwind before the numbers and as soon as I was abeam the numbers I would just pull power all the way back and one descending turn to final. He said this is a much better if you lost your engine, you would still make the runway. Doing it this way from the back seat I couldn't see much until I was about to line up with the runway and could bring my wing up to see better.
I feel more comfortable doing a little wider pattern and having a little time to set up better for the landing . I'm just curious as to the way some of you land. I know there will be different situations but just looking for a typical landing. Thank's
