I am not sure where to post this so I will start here.

How long will a cotton towell last in auto fuel before totally deteriorating?

A friend was doing some maintenance on his stearman this weekend. When he pulled the gascalator the filter was plugged full of cotton fiber. He investgated further and found a cotton household towell in his fuel tank. He said he had done some work to the tanks 10 years ago and can't imagine the towell getting into the tank then. The tanks were installed 20 years ago from the previous owner.

Either way, 10 or 20 years wouldn't a towell sitting in gas be mostly eaten up by the fuel ??? It looked like you could just wash the towell and reuse it again.

I sure hope someone did not place it there intentional.
