I am considering going down and looking at a '49 J-3 that has been in storage quite some time. Present owner said that the 65 Cont. has 10 hrs in log. He has not spoken much of the condition...pickled or not. He also stated some bird cage damage...ie a couple of bent tubes. Also an issue with the tail wheel spring bracket. Has wood spar wings and I would like to go with new ones and Univair struts. Said it is all there. It is close enough for me to get and has logs back to 51 or so. I realize the engine will need a teardown and inspection at the very least, and she has no covering. It was stripped off some time ago. I would like to get this project after an inspection. The issue that puzzles me is why it was put in storage after overhauling the engine. Mishap? Pilot err? He is asking around 15K for the whole kit. Any suggestions? I have a home with a strip about 250 yards from my doorstep now and would finally like to entertain the idea of being a Cub owner/operator. I am just looking for what may be a deal breaker for me as I may wan get into it soon...may go down this weekend and have a looksee.....wishing someone knowledgable on J-3's could advise/look-it-over to help avoid a bad investment. I can TIG weld and have an I/O that is worked with me befor. Tube replacement is not an issue ... if it is not a lot of longerons or major replacement. Just looking for a little guidance befor things get stinky and I get into a big mess with this.
