An airplane I am interested in does not have electric. However, it is equipped with a rechargeable battery that powers a handheld radio with external antenna.

Since the aircraft does not have electric, I understand it will not require a Mode C transponder.

Is there anything particular needed when entering Class C? Or am I not allowed into there. (I think it is only class B that I would be required to have it, no?)

Without a Mode C transponder will I ever be able to establish Flight Following? (Yeah I know, most of the flying will be low and slow so no need for that. But how about an occasional xc.)

Do any of you have one installed in your J3?

If so, what type and how did you install it?

Would it drain the rechargeable battery much quicker?
