The prior discussion concerning improper major alteration under the subject about the Clipped Wing Cub was excellent and I learned a lot.
Now I have been wondering how about major repairs that have been done to our airplanes but never recorded on a 337 or even entered in the logs. I am finishing repairing of all the bad stuff I have found on my J2 fuselage and found five tubes which have outer sleeve repairs previous completed. There are no 337 in the planes paperwork or on the FAA CD concerning these repairs. Nothing in the logs either although this had to have been a on-the-back type accident.
I have two questions for everybody. First I know such prior repairs are found quite often when restoring or recovering an older plane but can it be legally operated with no record of a previous major repair. Seems it would be similar to an alteration that was not properly recorded or was not allowable. Just thinking - Is the plane legal to fly and could insurance companies give you grief on a claim.
Second, how can this situation be corrected. I plan to prepare a 337 stating repairs had been done by a previous unknown party at an unknown time but never recorded. However the repairs appear to been done in accordance with 43.13 etc. although I cannot assure the thickness of the sleeve material and if its equal to or greater than the repair tubing.
I am very interested in what everyone thinks.
Thanks much
