Gentlermen,
I believe that one of the issues we have with the A65 crankcase is the camshaft journals/bearings excessive wear. When this happen the Continental Manual says to ream the camshaft bearings 0.020" oversize and use a new 0.020" oversize camshaft.
To solve this issue, instead of reaming the bearings to 0.020" oversize I was offered to have each half of the case machined at their attacing plane (only a few 1/100") and then ream the camshaft bearings and the crankshaft bearings (they will be oval too) to standard dimensions. This way, the camshaft bearings remain standard size and we dont have to use a 0.020" camshaft.
Notice that, besides other consequences this machining operation will increase the compression ratio from about 6.3 to 6.4 what seem not that bad.
The valve tappets gaps will also decrease by the few 1/100" removed from the case halves.
This used to be standard practice no VW Bettle engines...
Are you aware of this practice? Any comments about it?
