My brother found this in an antique store. The photo shows a young man in 1940's military garb wearing a parachute in front of a J-3. Two things about this J-3 look atypical to me - 1) the squat, cylindrical airbox filter, and 2) the split-V windshield. I don't know how common those characteristics were. Also interesting to note is that the left eyebrow appears to have been repaired a few times. I suppose that was a problem even back when they were new.
The back of the photo reads:
Hope someone else finds this interesting.

Dear Aunt Pearl
Here's a picture of me near my plane.
This is the type of aircraft I've been learning in as I went through the Army College Training Program.
Hope you like it?
Love,
Ray
No indication as to where the photo was taken. You can make out "CB" or maybe "GB" on the left wheel chock. No airfields with those initials come to mind. Here's a picture of me near my plane.
