Hello, I’m actually a returning member. I joined several years ago when I was in the market for a J3. Having no luck finding one at the time I wound up with a PA12 project and a 3 year frame up restoration journey. With the help of several very talented folks it was completed in 2013. (My part in the restoration was writing checks and staying out of everyone’s way).
With 10 hours on the tach it was awarded the Workmanship Award at the Arlington Fly-In (aka Oshkosh West). An EAA judge told me it would have won 1st if it had been painted the original colors. When I purchased the project it came with the paint, Juneau White and Bahama Blue so that’s what was applied and in my opinion is a beautiful combination.
The engine is a Lycoming 0-290 D2 and was rebuilt at Premier Aircraft in Troutdale Oregon. Several mods (STCs) have been added and this SuperCruiser gets attention wherever it goes. If you have time, and wish to know more about the restoration, I have attached a 52-page document detailing all that was done, including photos.
As much as I enjoy this aircraft, I still have the desire to sell or trade (up or down) for a decent J3, L4 or PA11. It was valued a couple years ago at $80k + by the retired WAAAM Director of Restorations, Tom Murphy. Tom has done all the maintenance and annuals since the restoration and knows this aircraft very well. The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) is in Hood River Oregon, and I highly recommend visiting it if you’re ever in the area. They have quite the collection of vintage and antique aircraft including 19 various Cubs, including a Lenape Papoose radial powered Cub. A little about me. I retired from a 42-year airline career a couple years ago, have two adult children and live with my wife in WA State. I’m based at a small country airport nearby and have many airport bum friends there.
