I know this question has been posed before but... Can a pilot with a Special Issuance Medical Certificate allow that certificate to expire and then continue flying as a Light Sport Pilot? Background. A few issues ago, in Sport Aviation, there was an article that definitively said that a pilot COULD allow a Special Issuance medical to expire and then continue flying in the Light Sport category. A friend recently received his second SI medical certificate and, because of all the hassle, told his AME that after the new SI expires he plans to continue flying in the Light Sport category. His AME told him that he could not legally do that. The popular interpretation has been that a pilot CANNOT continue flying after the expiration of a SI but the article in Sport Aviation seems to stand that interpretation on it's head. What is the real scoop here? Dwight Small-Tucson
