I am very lazy, and have never bothered much with the trim tab on my J-3. I am opening a new thread so this doesn't get lost among the tires and brakes in that other thread.

Today I was shooting my 40 mph approach, and thought "Huston says these things trim at 55, so why not?

So, ten turns aft and the aircraft stabilized at 55 mph indicated, just like Huston says. Then, on liftoff, it took ten turns forward to get back to hands-off, full power, 55 mph climb. I was in back, four gallons in the main.

Some aircraft require trim changes when other things change - a properly bungeed Super Cub cannot comfortably be flown without three turns of trim when flaps go from zero to fifty. A transport is always trimmed for a hands- off approach.

But the J-3? Control pressures are so light I simply never paid much attention. Learn something every day!
