Experiences of a forward observer in Italy with 70 missions completed. The goal is maximum observation at minimum risk, to which Lt. Stitt concludes that flying behind enemy lines is not a good idea. Instead, stay near or over the front line but fly higher. He typically flew 6000 - 8000 feet in the mountain areas, and 2500 - 4000 feet in the valleys.
Lt. Stitt's testament to the integrity of a Cub. In diving to evade an attacking FW-190, the pilot reported diving the Cub in excess of 180 mph, and he was apparently impressed that the wings stayed on (and no mention of the windshield blowing out).
Article concludes with a piece on the effectiveness of flying moonlight missions at night. Takes a little getting used to, but very effective results.
