I've got stock 8.00x4 drum brakes on my cub and one has been dragging so I took it off the plane to look things over. The immediate cause appears to have been that one end of a brake block had
slipped out from under the retaining clip. Rather than just putting the block back in, I took them
all out to have a look at the expander tube. The tube has a bulge in it under the block that had
slipped out and that block was worn considerably thinner than the others. Another observation -
all of the brake blocks have quit a bit of end to end play when seated, up to 5/32 but all close to that. So my questions:
Do the brake blocks wear on the ends over time causing them to fall out as mine did?
Will the bulge in the tube cause continued problems?
If the tube and all the brake blocks need replacing it's probably time to call Grove.
