For those of you who have the old style vertical front air box and an Air Maze air filter, you might want to check the condition of the filter element. I had one go south on me. I changed out the filter for the winter, and cleaned the dirty element like it said by soaking it in gas to put it away until the fresh one needed changing. I noticed that the corrugated tan filter element was starting to come apart and come off in my hand. The "cloth" part started leaving little bits of itself all over the place. I suppose repeated cleaning in gasoline has dried it out to the point that it has become friable and powdery. I don't think that would do well going into the air intake.

Since they are not available any more, I don't know if there is a way to remove the old wire and cloth filter and install a new element, say a Brackett Air Filter foam element in the old box. You'd have to install some kind of wire screen behind the foam to back it up and keep it from being ingested into the box, but it would be worth a try. If you have one go bad, save the box!
