My original project fusealge which has been replaced with a Univair, after bead blasting showed some significant pitting that was not at all obvious after I'd removed the cover from the tubes. I'm wondering what the history out there has been by various restorers on the condition of the tubes and other metalic parts of these old airplanes. Is it something just related to airplanes that spent time on floats or in high humidity areas during significant parts of their lifetime?
Or is the metal, even primed and painted still subject to pitting and rust? Were the original primers and paints and glues water vapor permeable?
My suspicion is that beneath every old non-completely restored cub, there is pitting on the tubes unseen because of layers of old primer and paint and glue.
