49 Chevy Fleetline, 2 door with that swept tail. It was green, my dad bought a lot of green cars through the years. He was color blind...maybe the reason. My dad, mom and me, left Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where we had spent the last three years. I Don’t remember much of those early years. Once, according to mom, Becky Jensen and I, a pair of 4 year olds walked off from the married housing and ended up at the foot of Denny Tower at the University of Alabama...half a mile or so. Our parents searched high and lo and found us safely cuddled together;
There’s a memory there, I must have got a tanned hide.
Post war vets, mom and pop drove west with ink still wet on an Aeronautical Engineering and a Masters Dietetics diploma.
Dad stopped the car under a clear sky, narry a cloud. The sun was low and there was this billboard. Ever seen a state line crossing with a billboard? My first and only too. A horse, a cowboy with a Stetson, a rope and larriat, a few miles of fence, Welcome to Kansas! An other hundred miles of wheat fields and we rolled into Wichita, The Air Capital of the World. Boeing, Beech, Cessna, Lear to name the big ones.
