Mounting step on new Univair fuselage

We purchased this already covered new univair fuselage and I do not like how the step is mounted .
It is bolted on the rear gear leg and a tab welded on the longeron. My problem is that the rear leg of the step just floats un attached and when you put pressure on the step it presses on a cross member and the fabric. I called Univair and asked, they say this is normal.
How does every one else handle this? Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill?
