I didnt want to hijack the other thread on this. Looking around the Australian War Memorial site I came across more L 4 ( and one L 3 ) picture. Thought they would be of interest. A couple have nose art!

One of the Piper Cub aircraft with nose art depicting 'The Sad Sack' cartoon character, used for spotting and directing artillery fire against Japanese positions in the Halmaheras. William Carty, Department of Information cameraman is seated in the aircraft with Pilot, Lieutenant W. N. Brisley of Minneapolis.

Philippines. October 1944. Lieutenant (Lt) James Power from Nebraska, standing beside his Piper-Cub aircraft named 'Drip III' after the occupation of Tacloban. Lt Power was spotting for artillery from this small unarmed Piper-Cub when three Japanese Zero aircraft pounced on him and tracers flew past his machine. He dived to fifty feet, the Zeros then peeled off and by clear evasive action Lt Power escaped from his thrilling experience unharmed.

DUGUMUR, NEW GUINEA. 1944-07. NX120317 CAPTAIN E.L. BYRNE (1), INSTRUCTING MEMBERS OF 242ND SUPPLY DEPOT PLATOON, AUSTRALIAN ARMY SERVICE CORPS NEAR A PIPER CUB AIRCRAFT. THE AIRCRAFT CRASHED DURING AN ATTEMPTED TAKE OFF FROM THE BEACH.
And a post war L 4 crashed in 1950 either in Japan or Korea. Looks like it has the buzz numbers under the wings but not the fuselage
