In Remembrance 2023
This from the daily journals of 9th Army Air Section:
November 15th
"Conference with Lt Newbury, Engineer Officer, 50th MR&RS, concerning rear view mirrors, winterisation of aircraft, microphone switch in control stick, jigs for transporting wings and fuselages of crashed aircraft, increasing the effectiveness of the cabin heater, mooring rings, tailwheel springs, and other technical matters."
Also there were numerous references to 1/8th inch Lucite windscreens, eyebrows and turtledecks. Eyebrows are what they called the leading edge wingroot fairings. Turtledecks are the 1 piece upper windows where they cut out most of the individual braces and mounting strips and fitted a curved 1 piece upper glass. Supposedly it cut down on drag.
9th was still trying to get enough of them by January of 1945, so not everybody had them as early as the Bulge like we thought.
The mirrors were going to be from P-38 spare part stocks, but I have seen nothing to suggest that it went any further than a neat idea.
