I believe the effectiveness (is that a word?) of a handheld in a Cub has more to do with the antenna and antenna placement than it has to do with the radio. This assumes a shielded ignition. I base this on a J3 I ferried from Alabama to NY that had a real Comm antenna on top of it. I used my Icom and it worked great. Based on that I put a real Comm antenna on the J3 I owned at the time. That J3 now belongs to a friend and we fly together a lot. Plus I hear him in the pattern even when we are not in loose formation. His radio sounds better than 90% of the radios on the field.

The reason I am asking for your experience is I keep hearing from some folks that they don't think "handhelds work that well".

What do you guys think???
