Fuel conservation?

There's an interesting article in the May/June issue of the Cub Clues submitted by Gerry Sheahan, addressing the topic of conserving fuel while flying a J-3. He correctly points out that the most efficient airspeed (in terms of fuel flow) to fly a J-3 is a speed which approximates the best lift over drag speed. That speed is also close to the best rate of climb speed. We all know that flying at that airspeed is painfully slow, somewhere around around 60 mph, especially with head winds and competing with traffic on the highway. It begs the question, did you ever think that fuel conservation would be an issue in a J-3 Cub? Or, financially, did you ever imagine paying in excess of 30 dollars per hour in fuel to fly your 65 hp Cub? Gary
