Just completed an overhaul on an A-40 that has a data plate, but no previous logbook(s). I spoke with the chief maintenance FSDO guy at MKE. The question specifically was what entry the IA should annotate in the logbook referencing previous known hours. He said that the correct entry in this case should read "Previous hours unknown". That entry is an accepted statement where the cumulative hours forward from overhaul may begin. I know Bob T (and I) understood that the previous actual number of hours should be logged and not an "estimate". Apparently the rules have changed and the correct entry is as stated above. (At least that's the directive from the MKE FSDO office) Gary
