In the most serious situations, flight crews performed no flight control check of any kind, and in others, they may have checked the controls to some degree, but not enough to qualify as a full pre-takeoff check.
That is not strange at all - the longer a checklist gets, the more likely a flight crew is just reading and answering. The quote was from a "Flying" magazine e-mail.
