This is something I learned over on SC.org. If I'm the only one who was not aware of this, I apologize in advance.
I was under the impression for many years that renewing my CFI by flying with a DPE satisfied the requirement of the BFR, just the same as a new rating would. Turns out no, according to the letter from FAA to EAA that Joe Norris of EAA was kind enough to post. Not only the renewal doesn't count, neither does the initial. One may do both in one flight, but the DPE has to sign off a BFR, unlike if one got a seaplane add on. That add on would count as a BFR without the specific sign off. Doesn't make a heck of a lot of sense to me, but hey, I'm no FAA lawyer.
