In Remembrance 2023
I have a 1940 copy of "U.S. Department of Commerce, Civil Aeronautics Administration, Civil Pilot Training manual. Dated 1940. The first 3 chapters are the basic stuff, Theory of flight, Lift, Weight, Thrust and Drag, etc. The 4th chapter out of 236 pages of text is "Parachutes"! Are they f**king kidding me? Parachutes? When I was instructing, I wasn't allowed to show a student how to recover from a stall!
And get this- "Remember the parachute is a costly piece of equipment designed for your safety and preservation! Handle it carefully and properly and treat it with all possible respect and consideration. Then when the time comes that you have to use it you will be able to do so with utmost confidence!"
"WHEN THE TIME COMES"?
Some 16 year old kid getting ready to solo . "OK MAC- TAKE IT AROUND THE PATCH. DON'T FORGET TO COUNT TO THREE BEFORE YOU PULL THE RING! OH YEAH, IF IT DON'T WORK, BRING IT BACK AND WE"LL GIVE YOU ANOTHER ONE FOR FREE!
