I guess I should start paying attention. What is the difference between a soft field landing/takeoff and a short field landing/takeoff in a nosewheel with flaps?

For that matter, what is the difference in a j-3? I do recall the idea that a power on full stall would result in a slower touchdown, but usually soft fields are short, and vice versa, so I never really worried much about it.

But it is a big deal for students taking tests.

Opinions?
