I am seeing oil dripping out the bottom of the airbox on my J-3 that has a C-90. I pulled all 4 induction tubes and found oil inside the Cyl-4 tube - also some (although a lot lesser amount) in Cyl-1. After reading a few blogs I removed all 4 valve covers and found that both the Exhaust and Intake rockers arms have their oil squirt holes drilled on all 4 cylinders. I have read that this is not that uncommon on overhauled Continentals. The engine runs just fine and has 73 and greater compression on the 4 cylinders. Oil pressure and consumption seems normal. The engine was overhauled 3 years before I bought it with 284 hours SMOH. I fly it 2 to 3 times per week and have put 820 hours on it since purchase (2011). So I have little to complain about the way the engine has performed. I have noticed the oil spot on floor below the airbox after it sets in the hangar for a couple of days ever since the first day I owned it - although the spot is getting bigger.
Question-1: Is this normal for C-90's that have oil squirt holes on both valves rather than on just the exhaust valves?
Question-2: Have any of you plugged the intake rocker squirt hole with a brass rivet or something - if so, with what and how?
I suppose this could be caused by wearing valve guides and not by the intake squirt holes at all since cylinders 3 and 4 intake tubes seemed dry - comments?.
