Seems to me that in the mid-1960s the FAA decided that a beacon, either red or white, was required at night in all aircraft. FAR 91.209 does not reflect that; at least according 91.209 if you do not have a rotating beacon or strobe installed you may legally fly at night with just nav lights.

How did I miss this all these years?
