You have engine trouble while in flight. You establish glide speed and start looking for a field. You spot a field and head towards it. In the meantime, you start doing your engine checks...carb heat first...is the fuel switch off?...Do you have any fuel?....then you check your mags. You switch it to R or L...

This is where I'm confused. Lets say you switch it to R and the engine gains its power again. Is the power output going to be the same as if the mags were set to BOTH? What can I expect to happen if R works and L doesn't?

Sorry, I know this is such a basic question...but I never learned this in flight school or any reading material. I'm also not mechanically inclined.
