Does anyone out there know any tricks or tips for storing tires and tubes. I just had to throw out four "new" tubes that I found in a box my dad had because they were dry rotted at the folds. I also noticed that several of my dad's old "new" tires were not looking too new any more. I did some searchs through goolge and the most information I could find on keeping "older" tires in good condition was on RV and trailer sites.

Basically the best sounding advice I found was to inflate the tubes to a low pressure to maintain shape, spray the tubes and tires with a quality food grade silicon spray, place them in a sealed plastic bag and store out of sunlight and weather extremes. Of course this includes cleaning off the silicon spray prior to use.

Most sights clearly stated to stay away from anything with petroleum products in them and that a majority of the tire "protectants" sold at auto stores had petroleum products in them and would cause more damage than good. What are your thoughts on the above advice?

I am not worried about how the tires and tubes look, I just want what I have as spares to last until I need them and be in a usable condition when I do use them.
