As with most J-3's, I'm using a handheld KX-99 radio, with a battery operated intercom and an external antennae. I've run a multi-meter through all the components and they check fine. The handheld is putting out more power than some panel mountd. The tower says it's clear and perfect on the ground, but when I get airborne(or much out of the pattern), it becomes garbled and unreadable.

Since all the components seem to check out, all that's left would be a sheilding issue. Any suggestions from those of you that have cracked the code on good hand-held comms?
