So, my 3 1/8 inch compass had to come out as it was very low on fluid and was unreliable. Another project to look at. I took it apart and cleaned the glass up and all in all, looks pretty good. Put back together and refilled with proper rebuild kit fluid. AH YES! It swings much better now..

But...I've not seen a thread here about the so-called set screws for adjusting it. This one doesn't seem to have any such external screws to make any settings. Removed the screw in the middle and here's what I see.

For the 24 thousand dollar question, is this suppossed to come out like this and rotate the wheels for N/S and E/W to get a good reading?

If so, off airport it's fine after some tinkering with those wheels. I know I'll have to dink with it on an airport compass rose, but want to confirm this IS the way this compass works for calibrating good readings? Each time, if off a little, slide this thing out, make a minor change and put back in?

I've got electrical system (generator w/ xponder) installed too, so I'm running a xponder and Garmin 295. It's a panel mount compass and I've read about magnatised frames and tubing. I've got an old video casette tape eraser - Huge magnetic field when the button is pushed. Do I need to - just for sure - degausse the area around where the compass goes before I put it back in, just for good measure?

And, just for the record - Let's just say..... it's in temporary 'experimental' mode until I get it to a shop for proper maintenance. :-} (at Annual in a couple of months)
