NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM FOR SPORT CUB S2 EXCEEDS PERFORMANCE GOALS
9.21.07 Yakima, WA: With production installations now underway, CubCrafters latest innovation to add more power and more performance to the SPORT CUB S2 has exceeded initial expectations. Testing of the new exhaust system for the O-200, internally dubbed the 4-into-None Exhaust, has validated a nearly 100 RPM gain over the conventional system. Moreover, that RPM gain translates into a nearly 10% improvement in static thrust! Additional benefits to the redesign exercise are both improved carburetor heat and enhanced cabin heating over the original exhaust.
Chairman Jim Richmond commented on the development of the new design. Our inspiration actually came from two places. Our first thought was to work with Tom Heid at AWI to develop essentially a 4-into-1 Exhaust application for the O-200. About that same time, we chatted with Klaus Savier, Founder and President of Light Speed Engineering. He offered some great input about further modifying the exhaust based on his experience of going 250 mph behind an O-200. Klaus has quite reputation for extracting every ounce of performance from that engine and he has the racing results prove it! Needless to say we were listeners to both Tom and Klaus. So we took those ideas back to Tom and the AWI team and we jointly developed the 4-into-None Exhaust as the production system that you see here. Richmond concluded, We could not have gotten as much improvement as we have without Tom and Klaus, so a sincere Thank You to both of them for their contributions on this project.
As was announced at EAA Airventure in late July this year, the new 4-Into-None Exhaust system is currently only available on SPORT CUB S2 within the Performance Package option. Work is underway to determine applicability for installation as a retro-fit for previous SPORT CUB models.
[size=10pt]ABOUT CUBCRAFTERS
CubCrafters, founded in 1980 by current owner and Chairman Jim Richmond, is located at Yakima Air Terminal/McAllister Field Airport (YKM) in Yakima, WA. CubCrafters roots are in the 60 year history of classic taildragger aviation, but its products and services - New aircraft, CAD-based design and engineering, CNC tooling and fabrication, Lean-manufacturing, and Award-winning tube and fabric aircraft restoration - are leading edge.
CubCrafters offers two all new, FAA-certified, ready to fly aircraft: The second generation LSA-category SPORT CUB S2; and the most capable two-place personal and utility aircraft, the standard category TOP CUB. In early 2007, CubCrafters was issued only the second FAA production certificate in the state of Washington. In 2007, CubCrafters will produce a combined-model total of nearly 100 new aircraft.
CubCrafters, under the banner CubCrafters Services, is the recognized authority for re-building and modifying PA-18 Super Cubs and similar aircraft, and it stocks a broad range of STCs, PMAd parts and modification kits for the existing fleet. In 2007, more than 120 aircraft will pass through CubCrafters Services for rebuild, repair, modification or routine maintenance.
CubCrafters Partners is the organizations group of preferred vendor, maintenance and training suppliers while CubCrafters Resale is the pre-owned aircraft sales unit specializing in Cub, Super Cub and similar aircraft.
