AOP
In Remembrance 2023
I was out in San Diego this past week visiting some old friends, and contacted Len Buckel about stopping by his hangar and meeting him in person. I've been to Sentimental Journey several times, but never hooked up with him.
I spent a couple of very welcome hours with Len and he gave me a couple of passes to the San Diego Air and Space Museum. I went back to see him yesterday and he had passed the word to a couple of friends that that insane L-4 owner AOP was going to be there again and for them to bring some nets and a straight jacket!
Turns out I had 4 guys waiting for me. Len, Bob Turner, John Hickman and Bill Levenson. Cub Owners all. We had some laughs, but since I was pressed for time, I didn't get to spend as much time with these guys as I wanted. Bob had to get home, too. He had flown over for the occasion. I offered to prop him and asked if it was OK if I pushed on his prop to check the brakes....after the third lap around the hangar he finally stopped chasing me! I've been out of touch for a couple of weeks- did I miss something here?
Those are a good bunch of guys out there north of the border. Hickman's Cub and his Jungmeisters are incredible. He has the last word in hangars, too. A full kitchen on the first floor and an apartment on the upper level. I thought I was doing pretty well with an electric door and an extension cord!
