Hi All,
As some of you may know, the ice runway at Alton Bay (B18) on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH is now open! I've landed on the ice many times in my Bonanza, and I am quite comfortable doing so in a conventional gear airplane. Now, after several years of Cub ownership, I'm thinking of making the trip up to the ice runway in the J3 in the next couple of weeks!
I have about 100 hours of tailwheel time now, and feel reasonably competent/comfortable flying the airplane. I'm based on a hard-surface runway, but also have a fair amount of grass experience from my training in Florida, as well as at Plum Island, MA (2B2) and Hampton, NH (7B3). So, what should I expect when landing on the ice runway? Is a three-point or a wheel landing preferred? Obviously, on-speed and minimum side drift at touch-down.
Any other tips?
Thanks,
John
