I am building a C-85 to put in my L-4B and have been researching paint colors for the engine case and cylinders. I am assuming that Piper did not change the color of the engines to OD before they mounted them on the L-4. The A-65 that is in the plane now is painted OD on the case and glossy black on the cylinders, carb, intake tubes and oil sump.
Harry Fenton says to paint the case Continental Gray and cylinders glossy black. ACS has rattle can Tempo paint in the Old Continental Gold. Is this the same as the gray? Fenton says he uses Plastikote gray like you find in the automotive parts store. He also mentions it is not FAA approved. It is paint, and why would the FAA care if it is on an engine case?
Any suggestions?
