Guys,
I am so thankful for this forum! I am still new to owning a J3 and the knowledge you all have blows my mind. To the question. When I removed my old tailwheel and springs there are a couple things that caught my attention. First the tailwheel to the tailwheel head (Lang) was held together with an AN7 bolt with a USS grade 8 washer under the head. The leaf springs had one short spring and two middle springs. Both the middle springs have the elongated hole on the tailwhhel side, I understand so it can move a little. Two of these on the same side sounds like a terrible idea!! So now I am putting everything back together. I have all new leaf springs and the tailwheel has been rebuilt with all new internal parts. I am so excited to taxi it for the first time. I was having some control issues. According to the parts manual the bolt to tailwheel is an AN6. I have the new mounting bracket with the shims for the AN6.
An AN7 bolt fits in all the holes without the shims except the bottom spring. Should I use the AN6 with the shims or put an AN7 back in there and ream that bottom hole to accept the AN7? I also noticed that the manual does not call for a USS high strength washer under the head. I know the Supercub and Husky call for this type washer. I have to believe I need some type of washer under the bolt head. Should I use an AN washer or should I use the USS Grade 8? Also I have heard enough torque values for the bolts to make me crazy:/ What is the proper torque for the AN6 spring to fuselage bolt and the tailwheel spring to the tailwheel if I use the AN7 or if I use the AN6. I have the torque value chart but I have heard of people using upwards of 70 ft lbs for the tailwheel to spring. Sorry for all the questions. I am serious when I say I dont know how I would do this without you guys. Thank you soooo much!
