I know the Stearman is typically worth more than a J3 but I am looking for one none the less.

If I could sell my 1940 J3L for the right price I would let her go in order to help pay for a Stearman.
If anyone out there is interested in buying her let me know. The price is negotiable but in the $30,000.00's for sure. Best quick offer.
NC30372, Mid time strong running, great compressions (76-77) 85 HP Continental engine with new mount, new 76 inch standard metal prop, new sealed struts, maul tail wheel. Annualed just completed. I fly her at least once every two weeks. No problems at all. The paint looks great for a flying plane, anyone would be proud of her. I can not seem to post pictures here but will be glad to send them if you give me your email address. Was stored for 18 or so years prior to me buying her in 2003, inside wings look like new, varnish looks fresh on wood spars, the white rope looks new too. Good tires original brakes work fine, holds her back at 1600 RPM. New gray tented wendshield.
Any other questions just ask and I will get back with you SAP.
Oh yes, if you have a Stearman and are interested in a trade, let me know.

Thanks,

Glenn G

Stearman prices have definitely been coming down of late. In the last six months or so I've seen two or three in the $50-65K range. Granted they're not show birds, but still...they wouldv'e probably been $75-100K this time last year. Good luck with your search!

Glenn, Please keep us posted on the Stearman quest - once you have one you will live for the day you get rid of it! Other than being loud, gas guzzling, heavy, slow, expensive, and too big for the hangar they are lots of fun for a month or so. Good luck and report in!

You are all right ! It is a little frightning thinking about giving up my nice little cheap flying cub for a large, loud radial engine powered open cockpit biplane! Very exciting on the one hand and scary on the other.
I would certainly have to fly less often due to the cost of fuel and oil.

Looks like the Stearman may just be too expensive to operate for me. A Hatze on the other hand might be more in line. I just love the open cockpit!

Glenn, The Hatz is a fine, fine plane. Next would be a Kelly-D; lotsa time in the two - fun, cheaper, easy on the ground. try to go for at least an O-290 as the O-235 is a little weak for either ship.

Kinner powered Fleets are pretty neat too, but heck, you only live once. Might as well go for the Stearman.
