Some of you may know Bob and Diane Dempster of with their world flights in their J-3 and Super Cub...well, on June 29 they are going to roll out their next chapter, the Seattle II, a full-scal replica of the Douglas World Cruiser, from the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Should be a fun evening with more to come in the future as they intend to replicate the journey as well!
Douglas World Cruiser Celebration Event / Launch of "Seattle II"

Join us for a very special event commemorating the 1924 circumnavigation of the world by four Douglas "World Cruiser" Aircraft that began their journey here in Seattle. Now, almost 90 years later, two pilots from Seattle hope to retrace the flight in a World Cruiser replica dubbed Seattle II, named after one of the original four aircraft (the first namesake crashed in Alaska and never completed the trip).
The pilots, Bob and Diane Dempster, have been working on the Seattle World Cruiser project for over 10 years. They both have backgrounds in aircraft design. Bob developed avionics for Boeing before leaving the company to focus on the World Cruiser project. Diane still works on Boeing's 737 program and recently completed a doctorate in educational leadership and change. They are both licensed pilots and no strangers to long-duration flights. They have already completed many legs of the world flight in their Piper Cub.
On June 29, 2013, the Museum of Flight will host a public celebration and ceremony to rollout the newly completed airplane. The event will feature a street fair atmosphere of booths and demonstrations with a special focus on aircraft construction and restoration. Visitors will be able to learn about the many companies, organizations and individuals who participated in the Seattle World Cruiser project. The event will also highlight the work of the Museums own Restoration Center where similar projects take place every day. The celebration will also include several trappings reminiscent of 1924. The plane will be towed to the Museum by an antique Ford Model T truck. Like the dedication of the original Seattle, the ceremony will use water taken from Lake Washington instead of champagne to christen the aircraftalcohol was unavailable for such events in 1924 due to prohibition. A bagpiper will also be on hand as a tribute to Donald Douglas who played the pipes himself when he wasnt designing airplanes. Finally, the Ballard Sedentary Sousa Band will provide a musical accompaniment to the event.
