Can someone settle this Model change question? I understand the "S" (for seaplane) was for J3's that came out of the factory with floats. I read through the TCDS A-691 and it looks like the only difference between a J3C-65 and J3C-65S is the landing gear. I was advised that if I do an STC for the float fittings as an add-on to my J3, it means a Model change from J3C-65 to J3C-65S. Another person told me that regardless of whether or not the Cub with the float fittings is on floats or wheels, it will, always and forever, remain a plain old J3C-65 (no S).

So if you have a J3C-65 that ran for years that upgraded and ran with a 85 Continental (remaining a J3C-65), then upgraded again to an 0-200 and addd float fittings to this, would it mean that this J3 with an 0-200 would need to be changed on the airworthiness from J3C-65 to J3C-65S? Or on the A/W certificate should it have in the model block, a slash for both options? "J3C-65/J3C-65S"? Seens that if the Cub didn't change to J3C-85 with the additional 85 hp engine, it wouldn't change to add the "S" either. Anybody out there know the answer?
