I’m adding a dipole antenna to my J3, it’s going to be a temporary install with a thin strip of wood and rubber backed zip ties. I’ve read the install recommendations but wondered how real installs have worked. I’m considering mounting behind the rear seat and perpendicular to the center of the airframe. The length of the antenna is over three feet so with a 24” fuselage that leaves approx 12” to go vertical on both sides.
Wit’s my interpretation of the antenna specs for VHF is should be more vertical (+45 degrees) and parallel with the center line. I’ve read other excerpts that say it should be mounted in plane with the prop. I’m only concerned with VHF reception as I don’t use ground based navigation.
I welcome your input!
