His pilot log recently turned-up. Wow, how it was then ! Primary training at the "Western Airlines Aeronautical School". He flew NC1080, An International F-17 ..a great pile of lumber and cotton with a 90 hp OX5. Looks to be a handfull. We have photos of it then with a nice spinner and scrimitar prop. There are later photos on the internet with a different engine, straight prop and missing spinner (I suspect a nose over). Flight time looks like it was sold by the minute, depression economics ? First flight 20 minutes/with noted 15 minutes of airwork. Next four lessons in the pattern with SOLO at a whopping 2 hrs, 47 minutes total time and 29 total landings. Log starts at zero after that to a total of 5 hrs , 47 minutes, most noted as solo. Other notes along the way included : "Side wind" and "spiral glide" and "figure 8s" . Best note was " Forced landing over Pinole, moonlight night, broken gas line". Log stops there but an envelope from the Dept of Commerce two months later includes his license and a memo informing pilots that tests have established a new reg. prohibiting pilots from dropping burning cigars from their ships because that can start forest fires.
